Important skills
Paul Clitheroe, Chairman of the Australian Government Financial Literacy Board,
comments on how changes in the financial world have made dealing
with money more difficult for young people.
Paul Clitheroe outlines the important role schools can play in
developing consumer and financial literacy among young
people.
This program, which has evolved over 17 years, provides a
successful example of how to engage young people with consumer
and financial literacy through a dynamic and innovative
program. The whole-school approach to consumer and
financial literacy now involves 13 schools from the Maitland area
and has significant community involvement.
At Surfer's Paradise State School, Jeff Licence introduces Prep
and Year 1 students to the topic of advertising. Students look at
using money to buy goods and services, the difference between wants
and needs, and discover the gender stereotypes involved in some
advertising directed at children.
Arundel State School weaves consumer and financial literacy
education throughout the Year 7 curriculum, embedding it in an
integrated way across the key learning areas.
At King's Christian College, consumer and financial literacy has
been embedded in the core Year 10 business studies course. Students
study the role of money, and apply decision-making skills in a
variety of financial situations.
At Aquinas College in Queensland, Year 12 students developed
their consumer
and financial literacy skills by planning and budgeting for their
schoolies week celebration. Students investigated their location
options and accommodation
costs and established a budget. They identified sources of income
and established
the amount they needed to save. Leasing, bonds, travel insurance
and contingency plans were also considered. An outline of the
program with worksheets and other
useful material including a DVD produced by the school can be
found on the
school website.

Program. Watch the video to see how they have been integrated into
the program.
At Surfer's Paradise State School, Jeff Licence introduces Year
2 students to the topic of merchandising. His aim is for children
to understand that films and other forms of entertainment repackage
their characters as 'merchandising' to increase profit for the
investors and to increase the lifespan of their creations. Students
develop understanding about the connections between what they buy
and how
they are influenced by advertisers.
